Epoxy Garage Floor Cost: DIY Kit vs Pro, per Square Foot

What an epoxy garage floor costs: $2 to $5 per sq ft DIY, $3 to $12 installed, with totals for 1-, 2- and 3-car garages and the five things that move a quote.

Epoxy Garage Floor Cost: DIY Kit vs Pro, per Square Foot
The short answer An epoxy garage floor costs about $2 to $5 per square foot as a DIY project and $3 to $12 per square foot installed by a pro (Family Handyman, October 2024; Bob Vila, April 2024). For a 24 x 24 ft two-car garage (576 sq ft), that is roughly $1,150 to $2,880 DIY and $1,730 to $6,910 installed.

An epoxy garage floor is priced per square foot, so the honest answer starts with your floor area, not a national average. Below are the published ranges, re-worked against real garage sizes, plus dated kit prices so you can do the DIY math yourself.

How much does an epoxy garage floor cost per square foot?

Plan on $2 to $5 per square foot to do it yourself and $3 to $12 per square foot to have it installed. Family Handyman (October 2024) gives exactly those two ranges, and Bob Vila (April 2024) independently lands on $3 to $12 installed, with labor alone at $4 to $7 per sq ft or $50 to $150 per hour.

Bob Vila’s national average for a finished epoxy garage floor is $2,441, with most jobs between $1,595 and $3,337.

What does epoxy cost for a 1-, 2- or 3-car garage?

A typical 24 x 24 ft two-car garage costs about $1,150 to $2,880 to epoxy yourself and $1,730 to $6,910 to have installed. The table multiplies the published per-square-foot ranges by the garage sizes in our garage dimensions guide.

GarageAreaDIY ($2 to $5)Pro epoxy ($3 to $12)Pro polyaspartic ($4 to $9)
1-car, 12 x 22 ft264 sq ft$528 to $1,320$792 to $3,168$1,056 to $2,376
Compact 2-car, 20 x 20 ft400 sq ft$800 to $2,000$1,200 to $4,800$1,600 to $3,600
Typical 2-car, 24 x 24 ft576 sq ft$1,152 to $2,880$1,728 to $6,912$2,304 to $5,184
3-car, 32 x 24 ft768 sq ft$1,536 to $3,840$2,304 to $9,216$3,072 to $6,912

Measure before you compare quotes. Family Handyman’s and Bob Vila’s garage totals are built on 240 sq ft for a one-car garage and 360 sq ft for a two-car garage. A 24 x 24 ft garage is 60% larger than that, so their “two-car” totals understate a typical newer garage.

What does a DIY epoxy kit cost per square foot?

Divide the kit price by its rated coverage. ArmorPoxy listed these prices in October 2026, and they show why the DIY range is wide: the chemistry and the flake load change the cost per foot more than the brand does.

Kit (ArmorPoxy, Oct 2026)PriceRated coverageCost per sq ft
ArmorClad epoxy, 300 sq ft$419 to $599300 sq ft$1.40 to $2.00
ArmorClad epoxy, 600 sq ft$799 to $1,189600 sq ft$1.33 to $1.98
ArmorClad epoxy full flake, 300 sq ft$959300 sq ft$3.20
SPGX polyurea medium flake$725 / $1,439300 / 600 sq ftabout $2.40
Polyaspartic medium broadcast$989300 to 500 sq ft$1.98 to $3.30

The ArmorClad price spread comes from the topcoat you pick (standard, military grade or polyaspartic). Budget retail kits cover less per box: Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield kits are rated for 200 to 250 sq ft each (Bob Vila, February 2025), so a 576 sq ft floor needs three kits. Our garage floor epoxy kit comparison lines up the kits themselves.

What else does a DIY epoxy floor cost besides the kit?

The kit is most of the bill, but prep and repair add real money. Count these before you decide DIY is cheaper:

  • Surface prep. Kits call for either an etch (ArmorClad ships with an etching solution) or mechanical grinding. ArmorPoxy’s own instructions say any existing coating must be mechanically removed first. A walk-behind diamond grinder is a tool-rental item priced by the half day or day; call your local rental counter for the rate.
  • Crack and spall repair. Bob Vila puts patching at $25 to $250 depending on the damage and who does the work.
  • Moisture testing and new concrete. New slabs need at least 30 days of cure before coating (ArmorPoxy and Garage Force both state this). A damp slab may need a moisture-blocking primer, which Bob Vila prices at about $1 per sq ft when a pro applies it.
  • Downtime. ArmorClad epoxy allows foot traffic after 24 hours and cars after 72 hours, and Bob Vila puts a full epoxy project at 3 to 4 days of prep and installation.

The step-by-step version, including the plastic-sheet moisture test, is in how to epoxy a garage floor.

What makes a professional epoxy quote high or low?

Five things move a pro quote from $3 toward $12 per square foot. A single solid-color coat over a clean, sound slab sits at the bottom of the range. Each item below pushes it up:

  1. Prep method. Diamond grinding or shot blasting costs more than etching. Bob Vila prices professional blasting at $1 to $5 per sq ft. Garage Force, a polyurea installer, says it requires shot blasting to a CSP 3 concrete profile on every job.
  2. Slab condition. Cracks, spalls, old paint and oil-soaked concrete all add labor.
  3. Moisture. A vapor-blocking primer adds about $1 per sq ft.
  4. System. Solid color is cheapest, full flake and metallic cost more; metallic epoxy runs $5 to $12 per sq ft.
  5. Topcoat and extras. A polyaspartic or urethane topcoat, stem-wall coating and an anti-slip additive are usually separate line items.

Location matters too. Bob Vila’s 2024 city ranges run from $1,240 to $2,685 in Miami to $1,705 to $3,720 in New York City.

Is pro epoxy or polyaspartic the better value?

The published ranges overlap, so compare full quotes rather than chemistries. Bob Vila’s $4 to $9 per sq ft for installed polyaspartic sits inside the $3 to $12 range for installed epoxy, and many systems mix the two: ArmorPoxy’s ArmorClad epoxy kits, for example, offer a polyaspartic topcoat over the epoxy base.

What you buy with polyaspartic is time and sun resistance: Bob Vila lists vehicle use after 24 hours versus 3 days for epoxy, and epoxy is the coating that yellows in sunlight. Our polyaspartic vs epoxy comparison covers cure times, pot life and why polyaspartic is hard to apply yourself.

Who should not pay for an epoxy floor?

Skip a coating if the slab has an unsolved moisture problem, if it is cracked and still moving, or if you rent. Coatings bond to the concrete, so a slab that pushes up water vapor or keeps cracking takes the coating with it. Garage Force calls moisture vapor transmission the number one cause of coating failures.

In those cases, a floating floor costs about the same and does not care what the slab does: interlocking tiles run roughly $2.70 to $6.70 per sq ft and roll-out vinyl about $1.70 to $2.40, compared in our garage floor tiles vs mats guide. Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what readers ask us most

How much does it cost to epoxy a 2-car garage?

A 24 x 24 ft two-car garage is 576 sq ft: about $1,150 to $2,880 as a DIY job at $2 to $5 per sq ft, and $1,730 to $6,910 installed at $3 to $12 per sq ft. A compact 20 x 20 ft garage (400 sq ft) runs about $800 to $2,000 DIY.

Is it cheaper to epoxy a garage floor yourself?

Yes, usually by about half on materials and all of the labor, which published guides put at $4 to $7 per sq ft. The trade-off is prep: grinding, crack repair and a moisture test decide whether a DIY floor lasts, and a failed coating costs more to remove than to do right.

How many epoxy kits do I need for a 2-car garage?

Divide your floor area by the kit's rated coverage and round up. Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield kits cover 200 to 250 sq ft each, so a 576 sq ft garage needs three. A 600 sq ft ArmorPoxy ArmorClad kit covers it in one.

Why do pro epoxy quotes vary so much?

The range from $3 to $12 per sq ft covers different jobs: a thin solid-color coat over a sound slab sits at the bottom, while diamond grinding, crack and spall repair, a moisture-blocking primer, full flake and a polyaspartic or urethane topcoat push a quote to the top.

Does a polyaspartic coating cost more than epoxy?

Not always. Bob Vila's January 2024 figures put pro polyaspartic at $4 to $9 per sq ft, inside the $3 to $12 range for pro epoxy. Polyaspartic usually costs more than a basic solid epoxy coat and about the same as a flake epoxy system with a good topcoat.
