Car Lift Ceiling Height Calculator: Will a Lift Fit Your Garage?
Enter your ceiling, anything hanging below it, the lift and the vehicle. You get the height you can actually lift to, the headroom under the car, and the ceiling you would need for full rise or for parking two cars, worked out from the makers' published specs.
How does the fit check work?
The checker turns your garage into one number, the clear height, and asks how high the lift can carry the car before the roof runs out of room. Every length is handled in inches; the centimeter view converts at 2.54 cm per inch.
- Clear height is the lower of the ceiling and the lowest obstruction over the lift (open door, track, opener rail, light, beam, duct).
- The lift itself must fit. Its overall height (columns, posts or overhead beam) must not exceed the ceiling. A clearfloor 2-post's beam crosses the whole bay, so for that type the obstruction counts too.
- Frame lifts (2-post, scissor, portable) carry the car by its lift points. Roof height = vehicle height + (pad height − lift point height). The highest pad height you can use = the lower of the lift's maximum and (clear height − margin − vehicle height + lift point height), rounded down to a lock position. On a clearfloor 2-post, the overhead shutoff bar replaces the clear height when it is lower, because the lift stops when the roof touches it.
- 4-post lifts carry the car on its tires. Roof height = runway height + vehicle height. The highest runway height you can use = the lower of the lift's maximum and (clear height − margin − vehicle height), rounded down to a lock.
- Headroom under the car = ground clearance + how far the car has risen (frame lifts) or runway height + ground clearance (4-post). Standing needs your height plus 2 in.
- Stacking needs the runways locked at or above bottom vehicle height + margin + runway thickness, and the top vehicle's roof under the clear height with the same margin. The HD-9's 5 in. minimum runway height is used as its runway thickness, which errs on the safe side.
- Ceiling you would need for standing headroom works out to (vehicle height − ground clearance) + your height + 2 in. + margin, then adjusted up to the next lock position. It cannot be less than the lift's own height.
Assumptions worth checking: ground clearance is measured to the car's lowest point, so real headroom near the lift points can differ. When you leave the lift point blank, the checker uses 8 in. or the ground clearance, whichever is higher. Roof racks, antennas and lowered or lifted suspensions change the height, so measure your own car if it is not stock.
Which lift specs does the checker use?

Pick "Custom" in the lift menu for any other model and copy its spec sheet: maximum lifting height, lowered height, overall height and, if listed, lock spacing.
Where do the vehicle heights come from?
The vehicle presets come from the Toyota 2026 model-year product information sheets (pressroom.toyota.com). One maker was used on purpose: Toyota publishes overall height and ground clearance in the same format from a sports coupe to a full-size pickup, so the presets cover the range without mixing measuring methods. For any other vehicle, choose "Other vehicle" and enter the height and ground clearance from its owner's manual or spec page.
| Vehicle (2026 model year) | Overall height | Ground clearance | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota GR86 | 51.6 in. | 5.1 in. | sports coupe |
| Toyota Prius (LE) | 55.9 in. | 5.6 in. | hatchback |
| Toyota Corolla sedan | 56.5 in. | 5.3 in. | compact sedan |
| Toyota Camry | 56.9 in. | 5.4 in. | midsize sedan |
| Toyota RAV4 (non-Woodland) | 66.7 in. | 8.1 in. | compact SUV, height with antenna |
| Toyota Highlander | 68.1 in. | 8 in. | midsize SUV, unloaded, no antenna |
| Toyota Sienna (roof rails) | 69.7 in. | 6.3 in. | minivan |
| Toyota Grand Highlander | 72.1 in. | 8 in. | 3-row SUV, height with antenna |
| Toyota 4Runner (SR5) | 72.6 in. | 8.1 in. | body-on-frame SUV |

What do typical garages get?
These rows are produced by the same code the checker runs, with a 3 in. margin and a 5 ft 10 in. person.
| Setup | Result | Usable height | Headroom under car | Ceiling for stacking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in.) ceiling, MaxJax M7K, Toyota Camry, stand under | Fits with limits: the car goes up, but not high enough to stand under. | 44.1 in. | 41.5 in. | not asked |
| 10 ft (120 in.) ceiling, BendPak HD-9, Toyota RAV4, stand under | Fits with limits: the car goes up, but not high enough to stand under. | 47 in. | 55.1 in. | not asked |
| 10 ft (120 in.) ceiling, BendPak HD-9, RAV4 parked over a Camry | Does not fit for stacking two cars. | 47 in. | 55.1 in. | 136.7 in. (11 ft 4.7 in.) |
| 12 ft (144 in.) ceiling, BendPak HD-9, RAV4 parked over a Camry | Fits: you can park one car above the other. | 71 in. | 79.1 in. | 136.7 in. (11 ft 4.7 in.) |
What should you check besides height?
Height is the first filter, not the only one. Lifts must be anchored and installed to the manufacturer's slab, anchor and power requirements, and a US buyer should look for ALI certification (ANSI/ALI ALCTV). The full decision, including slab, power and cost, is in the home garage car lift guide. To compare permanent lifts, read 2-post vs 4-post car lifts; for low ceilings, portable car lifts. If the opener is what limits you, see wall-mount garage door openers; if ceiling racks are planned, overhead garage storage competes for the same space; and typical ceiling heights by garage size are in garage dimensions.
This is a fit estimate from published specifications, not an installation plan or engineering advice.
Frequently asked questions
How high does a garage ceiling need to be for a car lift?
It depends on the lift type before the car even matters. A clearfloor 2-post with an overhead beam, such as the BendPak 10AP, stands 145 in. (12 ft 1 in.) tall. A floorplate 2-post built for lower rooms, such as the BendPak 9APF, is 123 in. (10 ft 3 in.). A 4-post storage lift like the BendPak HD-9 has 88 in. posts, and the MaxJax M7K portable 2-post is 89.5 in. tall. Then the car has to fit: its roof sits at its own height plus the lift height, and that has to stay under the ceiling with a margin.
Can I put a car lift in a garage with an 8-foot ceiling?
Yes, but only a low or mid-rise lift, and you will not stand under the car. With a 96 in. ceiling, a 3 in. margin and a Toyota Camry, the MaxJax M7K can raise the pads to 44.1 in., which leaves 41.5 in. under the car: room to sit or roll on a creeper. QuickJack-style low-rise lifts and the BendPak MD-6XP scissor lift also suit 8 ft rooms. A clearfloor or floorplate 2-post does not fit at all.
How much ceiling height do you need to stack two cars on a 4-post lift?
Add the bottom vehicle's height, a margin, the runway thickness, the top vehicle's height and another margin, then round the runway up to a lock position. For a Toyota RAV4 (66.7 in.) parked over a Toyota Camry (56.9 in.) on a BendPak HD-9 with 3 in. margins, the runways lock at 67 in. and you need about 136.7 in. (11 ft 4.7 in.) of clear height. Swap the cars and the number changes, which is why the checker asks for both.
Does the garage door opener get in the way of a car lift?
Often, yes. A ceiling-mounted opener rail and motor, and the open door panel on its track, hang below the ceiling over the front of the garage, which is exactly where a lifted car or an overhead beam wants to be. Measure to the lowest of them and enter it as the obstruction. A wall-mount (jackshaft) opener removes the rail and motor; moving the door higher with a high-lift track conversion is a job for a garage door professional.
Why does the result show a lower height than the lift can reach?
You should only work under a lift resting on its mechanical locks, and locks sit at fixed heights. The checker rounds the usable height down to the nearest lock where the spec sheet lists them: the HD-9 has 14 positions at 4 in. spacing, the 10AP locks every 3 in., and the MD-6XP locks at 22, 33.25 and 42 in., so its top working height is 42 in. even though it travels to 47 in.
What safety certification should a home car lift have?
In the US, look for ALI certification, which means the model was tested by a third party to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV lift standard; the Automotive Lift Institute keeps the list of certified models. In Europe, lifts are CE marked to EN 1493. Either way, install to the manual: slab thickness and strength, anchors and power supply are part of the safety rating.
Is my concrete thick enough for a lift?
Check the lift manual, not a rule of thumb. As one published example, MaxJax requires at least 4.25 in. of 3,000 PSI concrete for its anchors, free of cracks and fully cured. Post-tensioned slabs need extra care before any drilling. This checker only covers height.
