Car Lift for a Home Garage: Types, Ceiling Height, and Cost
Car lift for a home garage: five lift types, the ceiling, slab and power each needs, October 2026 prices, and a fit check for your own ceiling and car.
Car lift ceiling fit checker
Ceiling, obstructions, lift and vehicle in; usable lift height and headroom out. Full page with methodology.
A home car lift raises a car so you can work under it or park a second car beneath it. Five types are sold for home garages, and the deciding factors are the same for all of them: the clear height under your ceiling, opener and open door, the concrete slab, and the power circuit. The fit checker above runs your own numbers; this guide explains what they mean and what each lift costs.
What types of car lift fit in a home garage?
Five lift types are sold for home garages. Three are portable or movable and work under an ordinary ceiling; two are full-rise lifts you can stand under.
| Type | Example (Oct 2026) | Lifts the car by | Top working height | Tallest part of the lift | List price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low-rise frame lift | QuickJack 6000TL | Frame lift points | 21 in. | Frames lie flat | $2,025 bundle |
| Mid-rise scissor | BendPak MD-6XP | Frame lift points | 42 in. lock | Nothing above the car | $3,595 |
| Portable 2-post | MaxJax M7K | Frame lift points | 47.25 in. | 89.5 in. columns | $5,195 |
| 4-post storage | BendPak HD-9 | Tires, on runways | 75 in. runway top | 88 in. posts | $6,095 |
| 2-post floorplate | BendPak 9APF | Frame lift points | 73.5 in. | 123 in. columns | $6,295 |
| 2-post clearfloor | BendPak 10AP | Frame lift points | 73 in. | 145 in. overhead beam | $6,095 |
Cheaper full-rise models exist: BendPak’s APEX AL10C clearfloor 2-post listed at $4,195 and the AL9LC floorplate at $3,895 in October 2026. Our 2-post vs 4-post comparison covers the permanent lifts, and portable car lifts covers the first three rows.
How much ceiling height does a car lift need?
Enough for the lift itself and for the car’s roof at the height you want, plus a safety margin. The car’s roof sits at its own height plus however far the lift raises it. A full-rise lift needs roughly 10 ft 7 in. or more to stand under a sedan; a clearfloor 2-post needs 12 ft 1 in. before any car is on it.
The table runs a Toyota Camry (56.9 in. tall, 5.4 in. ground clearance) through the fit checker’s formulas with a 3 in. margin above the roof and lift points at 8 in. “Under the car” is floor to the car’s lowest point; standing needs 72 in. for a 5 ft 10 in. person.
| Clear height | QuickJack | MD-6XP | MaxJax M7K | HD-9 4-post | 9APF 2-post | 10AP 2-post |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in.) | 18.4 in. under | 39.4 in. | 41.5 in. | 40.4 in. | Too tall | Too tall |
| 9 ft (108 in.) | 18.4 in. | 39.4 in. | 44.6 in. | 52.4 in. | Too tall | Too tall |
| 10 ft (120 in.) | 18.4 in. | 39.4 in. | 44.6 in. | 64.4 in. | Too tall | Too tall |
| 11 ft (132 in.) | 18.4 in. | 39.4 in. | 44.6 in. | 76.4 in., stand | 70.9 in. | Too tall |
| 12 ft (144 in.) | 18.4 in. | 39.4 in. | 44.6 in. | 80.4 in., stand | 70.9 in. | Too tall |
Lift sellers often quote rules of thumb such as 11 to 12 ft for a 2-post. The table shows why a single number misleads: at 11 ft the HD-9 lets a 5 ft 10 in. person stand under a Camry, while the 9APF tops out at 70.9 in. under the same car.
What else in the garage limits the lift?
The lowest thing over the lift sets the limit, and in most garages that is not the ceiling. A ceiling-mounted opener rail, the open door panel and its horizontal track, light fixtures, beams and ducts all count. Chamberlain’s installed-length table puts a trolley opener 124 in. (10 ft 4 in.) back from the header wall for a 7 ft door, right through the middle of a bay.
Three ways to win back height:
- Move the opener. A wall-mount garage door opener turns the torsion bar from the side wall and clears the rail and motor out of the bay.
- Change the door track. A high-lift or vertical-lift track moves the open door up the wall. That is a garage door professional’s job, since it involves the springs.
- Put the lift where the door is not. A lift in the back half of a deep garage, or in a bay without a door, avoids the door entirely.
Enter the obstruction height in the fit checker above; it uses the lowest item as the limit.
What does the concrete slab need?
Any lift that bolts down needs a slab that meets its manual. BendPak states that all of its lifts must be installed on concrete only, that existing concrete must reach at least 3,000 psi and be cured at least 28 days, that a core sample should verify strength, and that anchors must sit at least 6 in. from expansion seams, control joints and cracks. It also says never to install a lift on hand-mixed concrete.
Requirements differ by model. As one published example, MaxJax requires at least 4.25 in. of 3,000 psi concrete, fully cured and free of cracks and joints under the columns. The BendPak HD-9 4-post is freestanding, and QuickJack and the MD-6XP only need a flat, hard floor.
Two warnings for existing homes:
- Post-tensioned slabs have steel cables under tension inside the concrete. Never drill one without the builder’s drawings and a professional’s sign-off.
- Floor coverings. Keep tiles out of the lift area. If you plan to coat the floor, see our garage floor coating options and coat before the lift goes in, following the lift manual on anchoring.
What power does a home car lift need?
The full-rise lifts in this guide need 208 to 230V single-phase power; the portable ones run on household 110V. BendPak lists 208 to 230V, 1-phase for the 10AP, 9APF and HD-9, and 110V for the MD-6XP and the MaxJax M7K. QuickJack ships with a portable power unit.
A 240V lift circuit is a job for a licensed electrician, sized to the lift manual and local code. If the garage panel has no spare capacity, that work can cost more than a portable lift, which is one reason 110V lifts sell well for home garages.
How much does a home car lift cost?
Plan on about $2,000 for the cheapest portable lift and $4,000 to $6,300 for a full-rise lift, before freight, electrical work and installation. These are maker list prices from October 2026:
| Budget | Lifts at that price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| About $2,000 | QuickJack 6000TL bundle ($2,025) | Tire, brake and detailing height; stores on a wall |
| $3,500 to $4,200 | BendPak MD-6XP ($3,595), APEX AL9LC ($3,895), APEX AL10C ($4,195) | Mid-rise, or entry-level full-rise 2-post |
| $5,000 to $6,300 | MaxJax M7K ($5,195), HD-9ST ($5,995), HD-9 and 10AP ($6,095), 9APF ($6,295) | Portable 2-post, or full-rise 4-post and 2-post |
Common extras: drip trays for a 4-post ($130 for two from BendPak), a rolling bridge jack for wheels-free work on a 4-post, and BendPak’s $825 caster kit that lets the HD-9 roll.
Which lift should you buy for your garage?
Start from your clear height, then pick by the job you do most. Run your ceiling, obstruction and car in the fit checker above, or on the full car lift ceiling height calculator page with its methodology.
- Under 9 ft of clear height: a portable lift. QuickJack for tires and brakes, MD-6XP or MaxJax for more room on a rolling stool.
- About 10.5 to 11.5 ft, storage plus oil changes: a 4-post such as the HD-9. It can also park a second car underneath once there is enough height for both.
- About 10.5 ft or more, repair work, no beam clearance: a floorplate 2-post such as the 9APF.
- 12 ft 1 in. or more of clear height across the bay: a clearfloor 2-post such as the 10AP.
Measure the bay width and depth too; our garage dimensions guide lists typical 1-, 2- and 3-car sizes.
Is a home car lift safe, and who should not buy one?
A lift is as safe as its certification, installation and use. In the US, look for ALI certification, which means the exact model meets the ANSI/ALI ALCTV lift safety standard; BendPak notes that not every model it sells is certified, so check the Automotive Lift Institute directory at autolift.org. Install to the manual’s slab, anchor and power requirements, and work only with the lift resting on its mechanical locks.
Skip a lift, or wait, if:
- The slab is post-tensioned, cracked through the lift area, or of unknown thickness and you will not test it.
- The garage is rented, or an HOA or local permit rule restricts the work.
- You only change oil twice a year. Ramps or jack stands on a sound floor cost a fraction of a lift.
Where do these numbers come from?
We did not test these lifts; figures are attributed. Lift specifications and list prices: QuickJack’s specification table and product pages, BendPak product pages for the MD-6XP, HD-9, 9APF, 10AP and APEX models, and maxjax.com, all checked October 2026. Slab rules: BendPak’s concrete floor requirements page and MaxJax’s concrete requirements. Opener length: Chamberlain’s installed-length table, as cited in our wall-mount opener guide. Vehicle figures: Toyota 2026 model-year product information sheets. Clear-height table: the GarageWise lift fit checker’s formulas, with a 3 in. margin, lift points at 8 in., a 70 in. person plus 2 in. of head clearance, and heights rounded down to each lift’s lock positions where the spec sheet lists them.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what readers ask us most
How high does a garage ceiling need to be for a car lift?
It depends on the lift and the car. QuickJack works under any normal ceiling. To stand under a Toyota Camry on a BendPak HD-9 4-post you need about 126.9 in. (10 ft 7 in.), and the BendPak 10AP clearfloor 2-post is 145 in. (12 ft 1 in.) tall by itself.
Can you put a car lift in a garage with an 8 ft ceiling?
Yes, but not one you can stand under. Under 96 in., a MaxJax M7K raises a Camry's pads to about 44 in. and a BendPak MD-6XP locks at 42 in. A BendPak HD-9 fits too, but only lifts a Camry to its 35 in. lock, so the car can be serviced from a creeper.
How much does a home car lift cost?
List prices in October 2026 ran from $2,025 for a QuickJack 6000TL bundle to $3,595 for a BendPak MD-6XP scissor lift, $5,195 for a MaxJax M7K, and $3,895 to $6,295 for full-rise 2-post and 4-post lifts. Freight, power work and installation are extra.
Does a car lift need a special concrete floor?
Lifts that bolt down do. BendPak requires concrete only, at least 3,000 psi for existing slabs, 28 days of cure and anchors 6 in. from joints and cracks. MaxJax asks for 4.25 in. of 3,000 psi concrete. Check the manual for your model and test the slab before drilling.
Is a 2-post or 4-post lift better for a home garage?
A 4-post is the better fit for storage and oil changes and usually sits freestanding. A 2-post is better for brakes, suspension and tire work because the wheels hang free, but it must be anchored and a clearfloor model needs about 12 ft of ceiling.
